How to find Bode's Galaxy (M81) and the Cigar Galaxy (M82)

Together Bode's Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy make up one of the most beautiful sights in the night's sky showing high levels of impressive detail.

These galaxies form part of the M81 Galaxy Group, which in addition to Bode's Galaxy (M81), the Cigar Galaxy (M82) also contains the hard to see NGC 3077 Galaxy. This video shows you how to find the M81 Galaxy Group in the Ursa Major constellation and all of the main galaxies it contains.

What equipment do you need to see M81 and M82?

When looking at galaxies every photon of light is important, which is why reflectors and SCT telescopes do better when looking at this target. Binoculars won't work unless you are using giant ones. Any decent-sized telescope on low to medium power should be able to resolve Bode's Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy, however.
